Sam Allardyce became the ninth England manager in a row to win their debut after a late Adam Lallana goal gave them a 1-0 victory over 10-man Slovakia.

Slovakia had Martin Skrtel sent off after half-time for an apparent stamp on Harry Kane but the home side held on until the 95th minute when they came undone thanks to this Adam Lallana strike.

There was criticism for Wayne Rooney on the night he beat David Beckham's English appearence record, as he dropped into a deeper role yet again as soon as he pulled on the England jersey. Allardyce responded to questions after the game about Rooney's position saying The Manchester United player could play where he wants due to his brilliance on the night.

A win is a win is a win but Sam Allardyce has a lot of work to do to get the most out of this bunch of England players, who will no doubt still be traumatized after their shocking defeat to Iceland at Euro 2016.
