Russian whistleblower Yuliya Stepanova has asked the International Olympic Committee to review its decision to ban her from the Rio Games.

Her testimony helped shed light on the widespread doping in Russian sport, and she had been granted permission to compete under a neutral flag in Brazil next month.

But the IOC say Stepanova will not be allowed to take part as she has previously served a drugs ban.

She says that decision is based on "wrong and untrue statements".

Earlier today, former Irish athlete Jerry Kiernan had felt the decision not to allow Stepanova to take part in the Games to be one bearing inconsistencies.

World Anti-Doping Agency's director general Olivier Niggli was also critical of the decision, saying that "WADA is very concerned by the message this sends to whistleblowers for the future".
