Danny North got Shamrock Rovers off to a good start to the new season as they beat Dublin rivals St Patrick's Athletic 1-0 on the opening day of the season.

On a windy day, North got in behind his former club's defence and found the net.

Champions Dundalk started the defence of their title with a 1-0 win over Longford Town at Oriel Park, thanks to Daryl Horgan's 15th minute finish.

Derry City came from a goal down to claim a 2-1 win at Galway United, with Ryan Curran notching the winner 10 minutes from time.

In the First Division, newcomers Cabinteely United beat the Wexford Youths 1-0 at Stradbrook to mark their start to league football.

It finished 1-1 between Waterford United and Athlone Town at the RSC, while no goals went in between Shelbourne and Finn Harps at Tolka Park.
