Wayne Rooney has hit back at scrutiny of his England performances, saying that he "sometimes wonder what the press are getting at".

Amid suggestions that he should be dropped for Thursday's crucial World Cup game with Uruguay, he insisted yesterday's extra training session was in an effort to make sure he is completely ready for upcoming matches against Uruguay and Costa Rica.
