Robbie Keane has thanked Ireland fans for their support as his 18-year international career came to a fitting conclusion.

Speaking at the press conference after the 4-0 victory over Oman, the long-time captain and record goalscorer described his 18-year international spell as an "absolute privilege" as he marked his final cap with a goal.

"It's obviously been an emotional week for me since I announced it. You could sense from the crowd that they wanted me to score," he said.

"All I can say is thank you. It's been a wonderful journey, a wonderful 18 years and I've enjoyed every minute of it to pull that green jersey on. I mentioned it to the players after the game. I said a few words. Never underestimate putting that green jersey on. It's the best feeling in the world and it has been for me for 18 years."

As for the emotions of taking off that jersey for the final time, it hasn't yet sunk in.

"I didn't really think about it too much. All the players were signing the jerseys. I was there for 20 minutes signing the lads' jerseys," he said.
