Arjen Robben has claimed that Manchester United’s tactics during last night’s Champions League quarter final were “almost like handball”.

Robben was referring to United’s defensive tactics, which saw them hold just 24% of possession as they looked to restrict the attacking prowess of the reigning European champions. In handball, teams often opt for a defensive tactics that sees them put all available players behind the ball, to block an opponents path to goal.

"We wanted to play football but they tried to stop us, just playing on the counter-attack, it was almost like handball," said Robben to the BBC.

"It was not easy, as Manchester United played very defensively and didn't leave any gaps," added the Dutch winger.

Pep Guardiola, Bayern Munich manager, made a similar point when discussing the difficulties his side have faced.

"When you see the second half and you see nine players in the box, it is not easy," the Spaniard said. "It's important that we controlled so well in this situation and we played with patience and found the goal."
