The last few days have been pretty positive for Munster.
After beating Perpignan at Thomond Park in the Heineken Cup, they received a boost with the news that scrum-half Conor Murray has signed a new deal, while the signing of Cardiff Blues No 8 Robin Copeland was confirmed.
Dave McIntyre caught up with Munster head coach today as he prepares for the trip to Perpignan and found Penney in good spirits.
"There are some really good signs. Conor has signed and Robin Copeland has committed for the year. We got a good victory against Perpignan at home so it's been a good few days," said Penney.
The last time Munster traveled to France they almost upset Clermont in last season's semi-finals. Penney believes Munster need to learn from that result.
"Right from now we've got to believe that we can win the game. I think one of the traps we fell into was a bit of doubt about our ability to beat Clermont. It wasn't until the second half that we started to put together the type of play we're capable of and nearly grabbed it."
