After winning back-to-back-to-back 100-metres Olympic titles last weekend, Usain Bolt repeated the feat overnight in the 200-metres final in Brazil.

The Jamaican won the eighth Olympic gold medal of his career in 19.78 seconds. Bolt was the only finalist to run under 20 seconds, with 100-metre bronze medalist Andre De Grasse winning silver and France's Christophe Lemaitre in third.

Just 0.01 of second separated Lemaitre with Great Britain's Adam Gemili and the Netherlands' Churandy Martina. Gemili missed out on bronze by 0.003 of second.

Bolt told BBC after the win, that he expected that race to be his final 200-metres competition at a major championships.

In the Decathlon, Ashton Eaton retained the title he won in London. The American World Record holder equalled Roman Sebrele's 2004 Olympic Record with 8,893 points.

The hosts Brazil won their fifth gold medal of the Olympic Games, and the first on the Copacabana, as their men's team won the beach volleyball tournament.

Alison Cerutti and  Bruno Oscar Schmidt defeated their Italian opponents in straight sets to win the title. Cerutti was part of a team that won silver in London four years ago.

History was also made in the Carioca Arena, as Iran won their first ever Olympic medal, by a woman. Kimia Alizadeh Zenoorin won bronze in the Taekwondo -57kg competition.
