Rangers manager Pedro Caixinha has made Bruno Alves his first signing of the summer.

The Portuguese defender joins the club on a two year contract after spending last season playing for Italian side Cagliari in Serie A.

Before that, the veteran 35 year old had spent three years apiece with Zenit St Petersburg and Fenerbahce in Russia and Turkey respectively, winning league titles in both countries.

That had followed 11 years on the books at FC Porto which included loan spells but also saw him win multiple league titles in Portugal.

Caixinha highlighted Alves' leadership ability as he reacted to the new arrival.

"In my opinion all teams need to be built and organised from the back and Bruno is a very talented and experienced player," said the Rangers manager.

"I’m also very happy of course that he is my first signing.

"What is important is that he is a winner with a winning mentality and that is something we all want, to put the club on a winning track again.

"Bruno will be a leader in the dressing room and he will demand a lot from himself and others in the squad, both on the pitch and in our training sessions."

Alves was part of the Portugal squad that won Euro 2016.
