President of Ireland Michael D. Higgins remains one of the League of Ireland's greatest advocates.

Before becoming the President of Ireland, Higgins was the President of Galway United, having been a fan of the team for decades.

Since becoming President in 2011, Higgins has created the President's Cup with the help of the FAI, as a curtain-raiser for the League season. He also regularly attends games around the country.

Last week, he saw Dundalk lose to Zenit in the Europa League, and travelled west 24 hours later to see his native Galway United draw against Longford Town.

As Dundalk won their third Premier Division in a row on Sunday night, President Higgins was the first to officially congratulate the team. Such is his love for the League, it's easy to see his admiration for Stephen Kenny's team.

“May I convey my warmest congratulations to Stephen Kenny and his team on winning the League of Ireland.

Their win means that Dundalk FC now joins Cork United, Waterford and Shamrock Rovers on the list of clubs that have won the League three times in a row.

May I congratulate the players, the coaching staff as well as the club’s tireless supporters and volunteers on their success in what has become a remarkable year for Dundalk FC, with outstanding performances and high quality football.

Their success has been an inspiration for many and it is my sincere hope that the example set by Dundalk will inspire many young men and women to participate in sport, and to support the clubs in the League of Ireland.”

High praise indeed from President Higgins.
