"I'm gonna fight 'em all. A seven nation army couldn't hold me back..."

While Jack White was certainly not referring to football, the notion of overcoming a seven nation army is the theme of the FIFA World Cup.

Seven matches and win the final one in the modern expanded World Cup, then you'll get your hands on a trophy that only eight nations have secured at least once.

But over time, there are teams that have been remembered fondly despite missing out on winning the World Cup.

In 1954 for example, the Magical Magyars of Hungary were stunned by West Germany in the Battle of Bern, meaning Ferenc Puskas would never lift the Jules Rimet trophy.

Twenty years later, it was the West Germans who stopped the Total Football of the Netherlands on home soil.

And eight years later, Falcao, Socrates, Zico and co teamed up to thrill the world in 1982 for Brazil, only for Paolo Rossi and Italy to have other ideas.

They are just three of the sides that missed out on going all the way. But which one was the greatest team to miss out on winning the World Cup? And are there are other viable candidates? Let us know in our Twitter poll:

You can listen to our interview with Johan Neeskens of the Netherlands' 1974 and 1978 teams below:
