Clare 0-25, Cork 3-16: a result that was both a relief and frustration for the teams involved. Clare’s Domhnall O'Donovan's last-minute point - his first in a championship game - means the two teams will have to face-off against each other again before one walks away with the Liam McCarthy Cup. While both teams are likely relieved they held their own under pressure, the prospect of a rematch on September 28th is a daunting prospect for all involved.

Speaking to Newstalk Breakfast’s Oisin Langan, Cork left-half forward Pa Cronin said a draw is a fair result after a fiercely competitive match:

Few sports force a replay after a draw at full-time, with most having some sort of extra time or penalty system in place to decide a winner there and then. The FA Cup Final, for example, had a replay system in place until 1993, but since then extra time and penalty shoot-outs have been used to sort out draws ‘on the day’.

Any player will likely feel the stress of being put through a second championship game, although for audiences it makes for great drama. The GAA is also likely to benefit financially from hosting a second final in Croke Park, even with the significantly reduced ticket prices they have already announced for the Cork v Clare replay. Last year, for example, it was estimated the GAA earned somewhere in the region of €9 million as a result of the all-Ireland hurling final replay, with other businesses such as hotels, bars and transport companies also reaping the benefits.

Fans, of course, will find their wallets a bit lighter, although the lucky few might get a second chance to attend an all-Ireland final after missing out the first time.

Do you think replays are the right way to settle draws in GAA matches? Should extra time or penalty systems be introduced? Vote in our poll and leave your comments below.
