It's looking like the worst-kept secret in sport at the moment: it is almost certain that the O'Neill-Keane team is indeed going to be the final FAI decision for the new Republic of Ireland management team. Latest reports are indicating that it will be officially be announced tomorrow, with a press conference due later on this week.
Northern Irishman O'Neill is said to be considering bringing in some of his former players such as ex-Wycombe defender Steve Walford, former Wycombe and Leicester winger Steve Guppy, as well as former Irish goalkeeper Seamus McDonagh.
O'Neill is expected to claim a salary of around €1.2 million, with a €800,000 bonus should Ireland qualify for Euro 2016 in France, which has been expanded from 16 to 24 teams.
Dion Fanning of the Sunday Independent talked to Off the Ball yesterday, discussing the potential partnership. You can listen to the full chat via the player below:
The O'Neill-Keane combination has of course provoked a lot of debate over the weekend, with arguments being made for and against the partnership. For many, it would mark the best possible end to the managerial search campaign: two experienced and familiar leaders with proven track records might be exactly with the national team needs looking to Euro 2016 and beyond.
While many will welcome Keane's return to home turf, some questions remain whether his infamously outspoken nature will suit a 'second in command' position such as coaching assistant. Others suggest it will be exactly the experience Keane needs for a longer-term career in management.
What do you think about a O'Neill-Keane combination? Do you think it could lead to a clash of personalities, or is it the sensible next step for Keane before launching his own full coaching career? Is there another managerial team you'd prefer? Vote in our poll and leave your comments below.
