UFC Lightweight contender Dustin Poirier is hoping a win over former champion Eddie Alvarez will catapult him into title contention.

The pair are due to clash at UFC 211 and speaking on MMAJunkie Radio recently, the Louisianna native said: "This guy was just a champion. If I go out there and put a stamp on Eddie Alvarez, I think I’m one win away.

"He might not have the same motivation he had on his climb to that belt but I know this: 'This is the biggest fight of my life, and Eddie’s probably thinking it’s not the biggest fight of his life…I don’t know what’s going on with Eddie, but I hope he’s busting his ass.'"

Poirier moved up to lightweight after losing to Conor McGregor at UFC 178 and he is eager to make amends for that defeat although he has gone about it in a quieter manner than others.

A win over Alvarez will launch him into the upper echelons of the lightweight division. However he will most likely have to wait in line behind Tony Ferguson and/or Nate Diaz when McGregor returns to the octagon.

The Irishman is currently awaiting the birth of his first child and is reportedly negotiating a boxing fight with Floyd Mayweather.
