The name Gerry Anderson will go down in the annals of television history for his contribution to children’s programming; his marionette creations wowed audiences, young and old, who tuned in to see what would happen to the Thunderbirds, Captain Scarlet, Stingray, and all the others.
And now, if a Kickstarter campaign can take off, a brand new series from the British creator could be enchant a whole new audience.
Anderson’s son Jamie wants to make a puppet version of Firestorm, a concept by Anderson, who died in 2012, that was turned into an unsuccessful Japanese cartoon series. The series, about a 23rd century anti-terrorism organisation fighting against the treacherous Black Orchid, will go back to the marionette basics that won over audiences in the 60s and 70s.
The crowd-sourcing campaign launched today, is seeking nearly €63,000 – the expense of producing the show entirely with miniature sets and practical effects is upping the budget considerably in an age when digital is faster and easier.
The €63,000 will be just enough to cover an eight-minute pilot ‘minisode’ of Firestorm.
The good news for Anderson fans is that in just one day, backers have already contributed 66% of the goal.
