The upcoming U.S. Open is being held at Pinehurst course in Pinehurst, North Carolina and is known for its infamous greens. The course has been called "the fairest test in championship golf ever designed." With 196 acres total and native wire grass, this course was built for a championship such as this one.

111 sand bunkers, a rising tree-line and only 41 acres of fairway make the course even more difficult with the small amount of total acreage. Ben Crenshaw who helped restore part of the course in 2011 says, "I just don’t think people understand how good those holes are. They’re filled with interest. They’re shorter, but there’s plenty of character to them."

In a recent interview Phil Mickelson raved about the No. 2 course at Pinehurst, calling the course a work of art that tests the skill and finesse of a player. Mickelson also remarks on how this course is decisive of a true U.S. Open champion.

The last time Pinehurst hosted the U.S. Open was in 1999 when the belated Payne Stewart won for the second time trumping Phil Mickelson. Many legendary players have walked upon the Pinehurst greenery including Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus, Tom Watson and Ben Crenshaw.

Jack Nicklaus remembers his days at Pinehurst: "I’ve always thought Pinehurst No. 2 to be my favorite golf course from a design standpoint. I’ve enjoyed going out on No. 2 and seeing a totally tree-lined golf course without a tree coming into play."

Pinehurst No. 2 course has hosted four other USGA championships (1962 and 2008 U.S. Amateurs, 1989 U.S. Women's Amateur and 1994 U.S. Senior Open), with this year's Women's Open it becomes the first course to host all five of the USGA championships.

U.S. Open coverage begins on June 9th.
