For all Eusebio achieved in the game within a team context, he and Benfica could have won so much more during their 1960s heyday.

The Portuguese club reached four European Cup finals during Eusebio's time at the club, but only emerged triumphant on a single occasion (1961/62) as they defended the trophy.

The following year, they would face AC Milan and lose 2 - 1 with Eusebio finding the net. The most iconic photos from that match are the moments where the 'Black Panther' finds the net (above) and hares away from his marker Giovanni Trapattoni (below) ...

After learning of Eusebio's passing yesterday, Trap described the Portugal legend as a "fair adversary" and also a "friend" who he worked with while manager of Benfica in 2004/05.

Trap also discussed the two photos which shows him trailing in Eusebio's shadow as the Benfica legend finds the net in the 1963 final:

"It is a picture I have in my book of memories that shows Eusebio starting to run powerfully from midfield, and I run right to him. But he was much faster than me and scored an amazing goal, and I realized that it was impossible to stop Eusebio."

 

Meanwhile, Benfica honoured their man in a fashion befitting his status as a club legend.

Eusebio's coffin was placed on a gold plinth in the centre circle of Benfica's Estadio Da Luz stadium as fans said their final farewells to a player who scored over 700 goals in the red shirt...
