Kevin Phelan has had a solid second round at the Joburg Open to get to 8-under par after a round of 68 this morning.

But Phelan is the only Irishman to have made it into the weekend field.

There was disappointment for Peter Lawrie, who could not follow up on his strong opening round as he slumped to 3-under par and just one shot outside the projected cut.

Gareth Maybin finished on 1-under with Darren Clarke another two shots back.

Wallie Coetsee leads on 12-under.
