The Professional Footballers' Association has called for any player who loses consciousness to be automatically removed from the pitch.

During yesterday's Premier League match with Everton, Tottenham goalkeeper Hugo Lloris was knocked unconscious in a collision with Toffees striker Romelu Lukaku.

However, Tottenham decided that the Frenchman was still able to continue despite the knock.

Brain injury charity Headway was openly critical of Spurs and manager Andre Villas Boas for allowing Lloris to play on.

The PFA has backed calls for immediate substitutions after players are knocked unconscious.

In a statement, the organization said:

"If anyone suffers a severe trauma to the head and loses consciousness, then they should be required to leave the field of play automatically."
