Former Real Betis manager Pepe Mel was confirmed as the new West Brom boss within the last couple of hours.

La Liga expert Graham Hunter was on Off The Ball tonight and he can see the Hawthorns being an exciting place if everything goes to plan for Mel.

"I'm a fan of Pepe Mel. The bottom line is that he is an inventive, creative, forward-thinking and very attacking coach. When [West Brom] are on fire, it could be quite the club for Pepe Mel. I hope he's ready but you'll enjoy his football. If it clicks, then they'll be a lot of fun," said Graham.

As it happens, it is a crucial week in La Liga.

Lionel Messi is back - and among the goals - just in time for the top of the table clash with Atletico Madrid, while Xabi Alonso inked a new deal with Real Madrid as they lurk behind the top two.

Graham noted a few interesting points about the reaction to Messi from both the fans and his team-mates against Getafe last night at the Camp Nou.

"A few things happened that were really strange. They were prepared to bring him on just at the point when the penalty was won. They were 1 - 0 up and not flying. Cesc Fabregas looked towards the bench and said 'do you want to take this?' The decision was taken by Tata Martino to wait as Messi stood on the touchline. Cesc buried it and Messi came on. That first instinct from Cesc to say 'do you want this goal?' was interesting.

"And when the second goal from a blinding, brilliant left-footed assist pass from Alex Song right onto Messi's toes, Messi then did exceptional things with his control, dribbles and finish. He runs to the fans and they go nuts. To me, the thing that's most attractive about Leo Messi is that an electric torch touches the fans. They were leaping and waving, not in celebrating a goal, it was like they couldn't believe what they've just seen. Very few footballers can do that."

Graham also discussed the motivation behind Xabi Alonso decision to stay at Real Madrid, young cantera player Jese's growing influence at the Santiago Bernabeu and previewed the Atletico Madrid v Barcelona match. Listen to the full interview via the Off The Ball Football Show podcast.
