For the second time since 1999, the US Open will return to the Pinehurst Resort in North Carolina.

That 1999 edition proved to be a very dramatic major as Payne Stewart edged Phil Mickelson, Tiger Woods and Vijay Singh in an exciting final round of golf.

But just four months later, the three-time Major winner would die in a plane crash, cutting short his life and career at the age of 42.

We were joined by Golf.com's Gary Van Sickle to remember the player who was also part of many US Ryder Cup teams and famed for wearing knickerbockers.

"I would agree that he was a bit of an underachiever for his great ability because he had that beautiful swing. He was a throwback. He was a feel player. His big issue was the putter throughout his career. But he was a marvelous golfer. You watch his swing now and that's a swing for the ages. You would put that up there with the five best looking swings," said Van Sickle, who added that he had a bit of an ego which was visible via his choice of unique attire.  

Van Sickle also spoke about Stewart's edgier side.
