Every time the axe seemed to be falling on Chris Hughton's Norwich reign, the team would get the result that would lead to a stay of execution.
But it seems the final straw for the Norwich hierarchy was Saturday's home defeat to West Brom which leaves the Canaries hovering just five points above the relegation zone with a tough run in.
Youth coach Neil Adams will take charge of games against Fulham, Liverpool, the two Manchester sides and Arsenal in the final five matches.
Tonight we were joined by former Norwich striker Paul McVeigh who is surprised by the timing of the decision.
"The fact that it hadn't happened for so long was probably the biggest shock. You think that if Chief Executive David McNally has said all along that Chris Hughton's remit this season was simply to keep them up - and so far that was what he was doing. It might not have been the prettiest football or what all the fans wanted but he's kept them out of the bottom three. It's a five point gap which in Premier League terms is pretty big," said McVeigh who feels that the Fulham match is "make or break".
The former Northern Ireland international knows Neil Adams very well but feels a lack of experience could be an issue at the highest level as Norwich try to fight for their survival.
"He had a fantastic record with the youth team but he's managed U18 players and that's a world of difference to managing first team players. Going in and gaining that respect incredibly quickly is his greatest challenge," said McVeigh who believes that the players did not give Hughton their backing this season.
