Ireland's Paul Dunne has qualified for the 2017 US Open.

The Greystones golfer will now take part in the second major of the year next month after making it through via the US Open Championship International Sectional Qualifier at Walton Heath Golf Club in Surrey, England.

Dunne made it through via a playoff to secure one of the four final qualifying spots after challengers including England's Aaron Rai and Li Haotong of China were among 11 to qualify through regulation play.

Dunne has already played in a major. He caused a sensation at the British Open at St Andrews in 2015 when he held a share of the lead after the third round. The 24 year old eventually finished in a tie for 30th.

This year's US Open takes place at Erin's Hill in the state of Wisconsin.

Rory McIlroy and Graeme McDowell won the US Open in 2011 and 2010 respectively, with McIlroy doing so at Congressional and McDowell winning at Pebble Beach.

Padraig Harrington finished tied for fourth in 2012.
