SSE Airtricity League First Division club Athlone Town have appointed Paul Doolin as their new manager.

The 58-year-old replaces Adrian Carberry, who vacated the role this week following last Friday's 6-0 defeat to UCD.

Doolin started his management career with UCD and then went to Drogheda United, leading the club to the FAI Cup in 2005 before winning the Premier Division title two years later.

He also managed Cork City before taking over as Ireland U-19 manager in 2010.

A statement from Athlone read: "The board of management of Athlone Town AFC is delighted to announce the appointment of Paul Doolin as our new men's senior team manager.

"Paul needs little or no introduction to the vast majority of Irish football fans.

"He has a proven track record in management in the League of Ireland and with Irish underage teams.

"He has managed UCD, Cork City and Drogheda United whom he guided to Premier Division sucess in 2007 and an FAI Cup win in 2005.

"He has also managed Ireland's U-19 teams.

"Before his move to the dugout Paul was a highly decorated and respected player having played for clubs including Shamrock Rovers, Bohemians, Shelbourne, Derry City, and Dundalk in the LOI and Portadown in the Irish League.

"Paul's appointment as ATAFC's manager was confirmed following a meeting between the parties late on Tuesday evening, August 17th last.

"Everyone associated with the club wishes him the best of luck."
