The Paralympics concluded on Sunday night, with an extraordinary Closing Ceremony at the Maracana.

Laois swimmer Nicole Turner carried the Irish flag into the stadium. The 14-year-old competed in five swimming finals in Rio de Janeiro in her first Paralympic Games.

It was an excellent Paralympics for the Irish team, winning 11 medals. The team comfortably defeated the pre-Games target of eight medals.

There was a minute's silence during the ceremony in memory of Bahman Golbarnezhad. The Iranian cyclist died on Saturday when competing in the C4/C5 Road Race. IPC President Philip Craven said the organisation was "united in grief" by Golbarnezhad's passing.

Craven also added that; "Rio 2016 will be remembered as a successful Paralympic Games and a Games that surprised many".

Organisers said they had pulled off an against the odds success with the Rio Games. "Mission accomplished," Carlos Nuzman, president of the Rio Olympic and Paralympic organising committee said.

The baton was passed to Tokyo, with the Japanese city now becoming the next host's of the Games in 2020.
