Just over a month ago, Padraig Harrington's hopes of competing in Rio de Janeiro looked very slim.

The three-time major winner was behind Rory McIlroy, Shane Lowry and Graeme McDowell in the Olympic standings, with only two spots on offer for Irish golfers. If Harrington was to be in Rio, it would simply be as a fan.

Fast-forward, a few weeks and the Dubliner will be leading Ireland's team in Brazil. He will compete with Seamus Power, with Leona Maguire and Stephanie Meadow competing in the women's event.

Harrington gave his fans the first view of Ireland's Olympic golf bag on social media, as preparations begin in earnest for the event.

The Dubliner was an integral part in helping golf become an Olympic sport when he spoke at the IOC Congress in 2009 in Copenhagen. Harrington had won two majors in the previous year, and his role was seen as crucial in gaining Olympic status.

A golf bag can become a treasured memento for a golfer in the same way, football players may collect jerseys. Harrington can add the bag, to a collection that includes bags from major wins and Ryder Cups.

Rory McIlroy, Graeme McDowell and Shane Lowry may have decided not to compete, but Harrington looks like he will treasure every moment of being an Olympian.
