With Portumna facing an All Ireland club final debutante in Mount Leinster Rangers, most of the pressure was on the Galway side during yesterday's decider.

But Portumna came through fairly comfortably to claim a fourth All Ireland title since 2006.

Former Galway player Ollie Canning has been part of all those triumphs and feels the 2014 win tastes just as sweet as their previous titles in 2006, 2008 and 2009.

"Contesting three All Ireland finals in a row and then failing to qualify out of your own championship for the following three years, it's not surprising that people were saying that this team were in decline. We also felt we had the players and the quality to win back a championship in Galway. But once we won the county final, then we set our sights on the All Ireland," said Canning, who shared the success with his older brother Frank who is Portumna's manager and his three-time All Star sibling Joe.

The 37-year-old also praised the golden generation which has underpinned this era of success for the Galway club.

"We had a number of players who came through from the minor team back in '98 or '99 to the senior team of our club. We've held the same core group of players for the last 10 years. We've had three or four players that hadn't experienced All Ireland final day in Croke Park and three or four new guys this year. But it's the same 10 or 12 guys that were there before," said Canning.
