The black card left referees' pockets 19 times during this weekend's Gaelic football action.

A bid to reduce cynical fouling, the new rule has already got its critics.

Armagh manager Paul Grimley described it as "a cod of our game."

Tonight, we spoke to ex-Crossmaglen and Armagh forward Oisin McConville to see what he made of the opening weekend of action and whether the black card enhanced the matches.

"I would agree with some of what Paul said. The general consensus today is that the black card has been largely a success. There were 13-odd black cards in 20 games and the danger is that people see that as a success. I watched a couple of challenges. In the Donegal game, Niall Morgan deliberately pulled somebody back to prevent a goal, didn't get sent off and consequently saved the penalty. The Rory Kavanagh incident in the same game was something similar."

McConville fears that the black card could lead to the advent of diving within Gaelic football and lead to more refereeing mistakes.

"We may be at the stage that there could be more diving within the game.  It may encourage people to feign injury. I'm all for the sentiment behind the black card in theory but it worries be that those games were not ultra-competitive. The scary thing is that when there's more riding on these games, there's an opportunity for referees to make more mistakes."
