One of the strange quirks about the NBA is the way that All Stars are picked midway through the season.

Yesterday, the NBA announced that starters for the 2014 All Star games, with Miami Heat's LeBron James getting the most votes (1,416,419) as the small forward heads up the Eastern Conference.

Unsurprisingly, Oklahoma City Thunder's Kevin Durant had the highest number of votes among the Western Conference teams with 1,396,294 votes.

But there will still a few surprises and to analyse further, we were joined by Ryan Jones.

"There are surprises. Obviously Kobe Bryant has barely played this year but gets voted an All Star starter and that's the nature of the fan voting. He's had a phenomenal career which is just about over. He'll sit it out and somebody will take that spot.

"We'll probably see some of the younger guys like Paul George, Kyrie Irving and Stephen Curry as starters. Kevin Love, I'm really happy to see him starting again after his rough last year. And there's Kevin Durant and LeBron James who are the elite guys in the league at this point."
