Novak Djokovic has won the Australian Open for a record-equaling sixth time, as he claimed victory over Andy Murray.

The world number one proved too much for the Scot, as he came away with a straight sets victory 6-1, 7-5, 7-6.

Djokovic now has 11 majors to his name, moving him level with some of the sport's most legendary names in Rod Laver and Bjorn Borg.

As his sixth win in Australia, Djokovic also equals the record of Roy Emerson, who claimed the title six times between 1960 and 1966.

Speaking after the match, an emotional Murray paid tribute to his wife Kim, who is due to give birth to their first child soon, adding that he would be on the first flight home.

Djokovic said that he was "extremely honoured" to be mentioned alongside some of the biggest names in the sport, including Rod Laver who was in attendance and Roy Emerson, adding that "it's a great privelege to equal and match the record of six Australian Opens".
