Most NFL players take a break during the off-season, relaxing aching bodies and spending some of the cash packed into their inflated bank accounts. Not Terrance Ganaway though.

Ganaway is a running back for the St. Louis Rams, who has just completed his rookie season. When football finished for the season he was looking for something to fill the hours between the end of this season and the start of the next. Rather than spend some of his hefty bank balance ($390,000 for last year as a rookie on the league’s minimum wage) Ganaway joked on Twitter that he would like a job during the off-season.

Ganaway told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, “I just wanted to stay fit, stay out of trouble, and really just try to save money and not spend a lot of money. So I just jokingly tweeted that I needed a job in Waco. Was anyone hiring?"

A response from an employee of Jimmy John’s, a sandwich shop in Waco, Texas, told Ganaway about an opening at the sandwich store and the NFL player soon applied for work. Shortly after his application he was working 12 hours a week for, he thinks (he hasn't checked), $7.50 per hour.

“I’m on the line that makes the sandwiches. I bake bread. Take the cashier spot. I had to sweep the other day. Clean the tables. I mean, all types of stuff. Slice the meat. Wrap the meat,” he said.

Ganaway doesn't expect to be making sandwiches for too long. “My No. 1 job is being an NFL player. So don’t get it confused as to me working at Jimmy John’s has me lazy. ... I know what I have to do. I know how to get in shape and I know what it takes to perform at a high level. Really, Jimmy John’s is just to keep me out of trouble in all the down time we have in the offseason.”
