Newcastle's 3-1 loss to Southampton at the weekend left the team six points inside the relegation zone, as they hope to achieve Premier League survival in their final six games.

One of the players bought in January was former Swansea midfielder Jonjo Shelvey. The England international has settled well in the team, but morning reports show that the 24-year-old may be able to hold the club to ransom if they are relegated.

According to The Telegraph, Shelvey's £80,000-per-week contract (€99,000 approx) does not have a relegation clause. That means if Rafa Benitez's side are to join The Championship, he will be the highest paid player in the league.

Shelvey signed a five-and-a-half year contract in January with The Magpies. He was even given the captaincy under Steve McClaren when Fabricio Coloccini was missing from the first-team.

Newcastle return to action on Saturday against Shelvey's former side Swansea.
