Newcastle United have reportedly approached David Moyes with a view to the Scot taking over from struggling Steve McClaren.

The Magpies were beaten 3-1 by fellow relegation contenders Bournemouth yesterday at St. James' Park but McClaren insisted after the game that he would not quit.

According to Luke Edwards of the Daily Telegraph, Mike Ashley is ready to step in and has identified Moyes as the best man to save the club from being relegated to the Championship.

Moyes remains out of work since being sacked by Real Sociedad in November and has been sacked from his two posts since leaving Everton having spent 11 years at Everton prior to stints at Manchester United and in Spain.

McClaren said after the game, “Would I quit? No way, I don’t do that. I have enough experience. I've been through this with chants like that [calling for his head]. That’s the perils of being a manager – and especially of this team.”

Newcastle lie 19th in the Premier League and just one point from safety with a game in hand. Sunderland, Norwich, Aston Villa and Newcastle find themselves cut off from the rest of the league and it will surely come down to three of those four teams who get relegated.
