A Newcastle fan who ran on to the pitch to celebrate Alexander Mitrovic's equaliser in the Tyne-Wear derby has been handed an interim football banning order.

John West, 35, of Bradford Crescent, Gilesgate, was charged with going into the playing area of a designated football match during Newcastle's 1-1 draw with Sunderland, Northumbria Police said.

"Mr West was handed an interim football banning order until his first appearance at Newcastle Magistrates' Court on April 6" said a spokesperson from Northumbria Police.

Chief Superintendent Steve Neill did say about the fan behaviour at the event: "I want to praise football fans who attended the Tyne-Wear derby today and behaved impeccably at what was a very tense occasion.

"We understand how important this fixture is to the people of this region and we recognised our policing plan needed to reflect that.

"That plan saw us work closely with partners and I want to thank them personally for all their efforts in making this operation such a success."
