John Joe Nevin has been promoted to the top spot in the world bantamweight rankings.

The London 2012 silver medalist has seen his ranking improve after winning gold at last month's the European Championships in Belarus and he leapfrogs Cuba's Jorge Alvarez-Estrada, who he beat in last year's Olympic semi-final.

Nevin joins Katie Taylor as the Irish elite boxing squad's two top-ranked fighters while Paddy Barnes and Michael Conlon are still ranked third in their respective weight divisions.
