The big winners from the weekend's Premier League action were Manchester City and Liverpool who brushed aside Arsenal and Tottenham respectively.

However, City lost top scorer Sergio Aguero to a month long injury lay-off but Pat Nevin told Off The Ball thinks that only one thing will stop their momentum.

"From the start of the season, I have said that they are my tip to win it. What they can bring off the bench is stunning. It's no different now and even though Aguero will be out for at least a month, you've got Dzeko to come back and there's no real concerns. There is one real worry - do not lose Vincent Kompany for any lenght of time!"

Meanwhile, Liverpool managed to obliterate Tottenham without the injured Steven Gerrard in the engine room, with Lucas Leiva and Joe Allen performing admirably.

Nevin feels Gerrard still has a big role to play.

"I don't think he holds them back. He's almost like a Frank Lampard. Every time I've written him off, I've gone to watch him play and he's been absolutely phenomenal. [The 5 - 0 win] should tell Brendan Rodgers that he doesn't have to rely on him and that there are other options out there."

With Spurs' transfer policy under scrutiny, Nevin also has some sympathy for Andre Villas Boas who was sacked by Tottenham this morning after yesterday's 5 - 0 loss to Liverpool at White Hart Lane.

"It's not a terrible season. They've had 3 or 4 bad results and two absolute stinkers but first you need to find out who's fault it was. I really thought the power was there because they'd put a lot more power into the team but tactically things weren't quite right. The striker is basically a sniffer and is played up front on his own when you'd be better off with a Didier Drogba style player. I feel sorry for Andre Villas Boas but not too sorry as we all know he won't get a bad pay-off."

Nevin also had plenty of sympathy for his former Chelsea room-mate Steve Clarke who was sacked by West Brom after a poor recent run of form.

"I don't know if anyone watched the Sports Personality of the Year and Andy Murray complaining to people about his voice not sounding that exciting...Clarkey is a bit like that. We Scots are good at developing these dour characters. Dalglish had a bit of that about him. It doesn't make you bad and it shouldn't make you oversee the fact that he's actually very good technically. I think he's done a very good job with a team that you shouldn't expect to be anywhere else but the bottom third."
