SOCCER

Everton manager Roberto Martinez says defensive mistakes cost them in last night's 5-2 defeat by Dynamo Kiev in Ukraine.

They lost 6-4 on aggregate in the Europa League last-16, with both Séamus Coleman and James McCarthy featuring for the Blues as they crashed out to leave the Premier League with no representatives in European competitions for the rest of this season.

The Madeira Islands Open is scheduled to begin this morning after yesterday's action was suspended.

The tournament has now been reduced to a 54-hole tournament, with Peter Lawrie and Kevin Phelan among the Irish players in the field.

Meanwhile, Pádraig Harrington is two off the lead going into the second round at the Arnold Palmer Invitational.

The three-time Major winner carded an impressive 4-under-par 68 for his opening round at Bay Hill to sit just two shots off the frontrunner Morgan Hoffman.

Rory McIlroy is 2-under, Graeme McDowell is level par while Shane Lowry is 3-over.

HURLING

Damien Cahalane returns to the corner back ahead of William Kearney in the only change to the Cork defence for Sunday's Allianz NHL Division 1A game with Tipperary.

Rob O'Shea replaces Brian Lawton at wing forward while Alan Cadogan and Luke O'Farrell take over from Stephen Moylan and Paudie O'Sullivan in the full forward line.

RACING

This evening's racing is in Dundalk, where the first of a seven-race card gets going at 6.05.
