SOCCER

The Republic of Ireland squad have been given the day off ahead of Saturday's Euro 2016 qualifier with Scotland.

Martin O'Neill decided to cancel this morning's scheduled session to allow extra down time for his players in the wake of the scoreless draw with England.

Poland top Group D, and on Sunday they'll face a Georgia side who are in friendly action with Ukraine tonight.

In the SSE Airtricity League, Shamrock Rovers moved to within four points of leaders Dundalk last night.

Mikey Drennan scored his tenth of the season, but was later sent off as Pat Fenlon's side thrashed Derry City 4-1 in Tallaght.

That red means Drennan will be suspended for Friday's Dublin derby with Bohemians.

Bohs are in action tonight - Keith Long's side cross the Liffey to face St. Patrick's Athletic, with kick-off at Richmond Park at 7.45.

In the First Division, both UCD and Wexford Youths will hope to close the gap on First Division leaders Finn Harps tonight.

They play host to Shelbourne and Athlone respectively.

The United States opened up their Womens World Cup campaign with a 3-1 win over Australia in Winnipeg.

The other game in Group D saw Sweden and Nigeria draw 3-3.

Japan began the defence of their title with a 1-0 Group C win over Switzerland, while Ecuador were thrashed 6-0 by Cameroon.

In Group F this evening, France face England, while the other game in the group sees Colombia take on Mexico.

And in Group E, Montreal's Olympic Stadium hosts the meetings of Spain and Costa Rica, and Brazil and South Korea.

GAELIC GAMES

Kerry look like they'll be without All Star defender Paul Murphy for the beginning of their All Ireland Football defence.

The Rathmore man is suffering from a shoulder injury.

Kieran O'Leary is also a big doubt with a knee injury.

HORSE RACING

There's more racing in Roscommon this evening.

The Rated Novice Hurdle and the Athlone Handicap Hurdle will be the twin features on today's seven-race card, with the first going to post at 5.40pm.
