Wales scrum-half Mike Philips has been sacked by Bayonne. Philips was accused of turning up for training drunk and following a meeting with club officials on Saturday was told his contract would be cancelled.
It is alleged that Philips turned up to a video analysis session under the influence of alcohol. Two other Bayonne players – New Zealander Dwayne Haare and Stephen Brett – were also accused of the same offence. The two were fined but not suspended.
Philips left France on Sunday to join up with the Welsh national squad for the upcoming autumn internationals. The scrum-half has 77 caps for Wales, joined the French club in 2011.
