Phil Mickelson has won The Open Championship – his fifth major and first Open win - with a remarkable final round of 66. While all others attempting to make their way around the final day at Muirfield were finding the course a near impossible task, Mickelson was playing astonishing shots to score an almost unbelievable final round score of 5 under. 4 birdies on the back were the difference between Mickelson and the rest as the course proved a true test of experience.
In contrast to Mickelson’s below par round, Tiger Woods, Lee Westwood, Adam Scott and Hunter Mahan – all considered contenders this morning, when Mickelson was the name on nobody’s lips – hit above par for the day, with this morning’s leader Lee Westwood shooting 4 over for the day and finishing +1 for the tournament.
