Michael Conlan is through to the quarter-finals of the men's bantamweight division at Rio 2016.

The Belfast native defeated Armenia's Aram Avagyan on Sunday afternoon, and moves one win away from a guaranteed medal. He now faces either Thailand's Chatchai Budtee or Russia's Vladimir Nikitin in the quarter-finals.

A dominant performance saw Conlan win the fight by unanimous decision. Two of the three judges gave the three rounds to the 24-year-old two-time Olympian.

In what has been a disappointing tournament for Ireland's boxers so far, only Conlan and Katie Taylor remain in the competition. Taylor makes her Rio 2016 debut on Monday afternoon.

Conlan returns to action on Tuesday afternoon, only one win away from at least matching the bronze medal he won in London four years ago.
