Michael Carrick looks like he has been handed a lifeline by Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho.

The 34-year-old is out-of-contract with the team at the end of next month. He last played for United in their FA Cup win over Crystal Palace at Wembley.

Carrick joined the Old Trafford-team in 2006 from Tottenham. In his time in Manchester, he was won every major domestic and international club title. The FA Cup win earlier this month completed the collection.

The England midfielder may still decide to move away, but the move to offer him a contract, is the first big move by Mourinho since taking over last week.

Speaking at the Monaco Grand Prix at the weekend, Michael Carrick said he was "hopeful" about continuing his career at Old Trafford. He also added that he thought Mourinho would be a good fit with the team.

Manchester United begin their pre-season campaign with a game against Borussia Dortmund in China on July 22nd. The tour of China will also include a game against local rivals Manchester City
