Earlier today, former NFL player Aaron Hernandez was sentenced to life in prison after being found guilty of first-degree murder.

Tonight, Boston-based investigative journalist Michele McPhee joined us on Off The Ball to give us more background on the court case and decision as well as the sporting impact.

One example was the reason why New England Patriots' owner Robert Kraft was called to give evidence.

"He was called to the stand to explain what he knew about Aaron Hernandez and this murder that took place about a mile away from his $1.2M mansion. Bob Kraft prides himself on the New England Patriots being a family organisation and that his team are upstanding citizens and I think that Aaron Hernandez obviously debunked this ideal that people in the States have of the New England Patriots," said McPhee.

The jurors ultimately took eight days to come to a decision, although an appeal from the defence is in the pipeline.

"They're drafting his appeal as we speak, so he absolutely has an opportunity to appeal. But you have to remember he's facing another double-murder trial in the city of Boston, stemming from a triple shooting where two of the victims died," said McPhee.
