Rory McIlroy is hoping an improvement in the weather conditions at PGA National will help him rise up the leaderboard in Florida.

The Holywood native hasn't had the best of starts to his PGA Tour season.

He's eight shots off leader Jim Herman after the first round of the latest event - the Honda Classic.

The world number one hit a three-over-par opening round of 73, but he's confident he can drag himself back into contention.

"When nothing's going your way and you don't really have anything to feed off, you don't see many good shots," the 25-year-old said.

"We're all struggling. It was a grind out there. I shot better today than the previous time I was here so it was a little bit of an accomplishment.

"The wind started to die down the last few holes. I looked at the forecast ... it looks nice; five-to-10-mile-an-hour winds.

"Hope fully the conditions will be a little easier and enable us to hopefully shoot some better scores."
