Rory McIlroy has taken until the final month of the year but the former world number one has finally got his first win of 2013.
McIlroy took a dramatic bogey on the 18th hole of the final round at the Australian Open to jump into the lead for the first time in the tournament. Australian Adam Scott had led throught the week but the hometown favourite bogeyed the final hole, allowing McIlroy to lead for the first time. The contrasting fortunes on the final hole made it a five shot swing in the Northern Irishman’s favour across the day. Scott had been looking set to complete an Australian triple crown of winning his home country’s three biggest tournaments in the one year, a feat only accomplished once before, following his wins at the Australian PGA and Masters last month.
Scott’s form of the first three days was somewhat lacking however, and McIlroy took full advantage as he hit a round of 66 for the day, with the highlight an eagle at the seventh. McIlroy drew level at the eighth but Scott regained a narrow lead which he held until the final hole.
The win comes as a welcome relief for the Down man, who has undergone a winless year on the back of his major winning 2012 and seen his world ranking fall from 1 to 6.
McIlroy admitted winning a tournament this year was a relief, telling Sky Sports after the round: “I wanted to get a win by the end of the season and finally I’ve been able to get one, but more satisfying than that is being able to take one of the best golfers in the world down the stretch and come out on top. Adam is a phenomenal golfer.”
