Former Republic of Ireland boss Mick McCarthy has been confirmed as the new manager of Cypriot club APOEL.

The 61-year-old has agreed to a deal up until the summer of 2022 and will be joined by his long serving assistant Terry Connor.

McCarthy was in Cyprus over the weekend to watch the club in action and the deal was signed on Monday.

The former Sunderland and Wolves boss has been out of a job since leaving his role with the Republic of Ireland in April of this year and has not worked at club level since he left Ipswich Town in 2018.

APOEL have won the Cypriot title a record 28 times but have made a poor start to the 2020-21 season, leaving them 10th out of 14 teams in the league with just two wins from their first eight top-flight games.

The club finished third last season and were knocked out of this season's Europa League in the playoff round at the hands of Czech Republic's Slovan Liberec.
