Wigan Athletic Football Club have just announced the signing of Malky Mackay as their new manager.

Owner of the Latics, Dave Whelan, spoke in confident terms about the appointment:

"Malky Mackay the right man to lead us back to the Premier League."

The 42 year old replaces Uwe Rosler, who was sacked a week ago after a disastrous start which sees Wigan only two places from the bottom of the Championship table.

Mackay, who had long been a fan-favourite at Cardiff, where he secured Primier League promotion, was widely condemned after a serious of racist, sexist and homophobic texts were released by his former club.

Whelan, who said that players "should get on with it" in relation to Luis Suarez's alleged racism, says that Mackay is ready to start afresh.

"Malky made a mistake, he knows that, we know that and we have discussed this issue at length face to face.

"He apologised publicly for what happened at the time and has paid for what he did, in terms of the bad publicity he has received since and will no doubt continue to suffer in the future.

"But I believe that it is now time to move on."
