First Division

Longford Town have been promoted to the SSE Airtricity League after a 5 - 0  home win over Shamrock Rovers B.

The Midlanders needed a win to return to the top flight for the first time since their 2007 relegation.

They also won the First Division title for the first time in the process.

An early goal from Gary Shaw eased any worries, with Don Cowan adding another.

Shaw struck again before half-time to send the home fans into raptures as promotion moved ever closer.

Cowan and David O'Sullivan scored the second half goals to round off a 5 - 0 win and seal promotion.

The result means Shelbourne will go into the playoffs. The Dublin side drew 1 - 1 with Galway FC at Tolka Park.

Dylan Connolly got the first half goal but Shels had Dylan Cashin and Brian Gannon sent off in the second half.

The other First Division match saw Waterford United beat Cobh Ramblers 2 - 1.

Premier Division

Meanwhile, Cork City edged up on title rivals Dundalk with a 2 - 1 win against Drogheda United.

John Dunleavy and Mark O'Sullivan scored either side of half-time as Cork moved level on points with Dundalk - albeit having played a game more and having a significantly inferior goal difference.

Gavin Brennan was red carded for Drogheda but Declan O'Brien pulled one back for the Louth side in the final 10 minutes.

Limerick saw off bottom side Athlone Town with a pair of braces from Kieran Djilali and Rory Gaffney sealing victory.
