Liverpool are top of the Premier League after a 4-0 win over Tottenham at Anfield. Any fears that nerves might hamper Liverpool’s natural attacking nature were allayed within the first two minutes when Younes Kaboul put the ball into his own net with an artless finish.

From that point the home side dominated the game and could have added to their first goal on several occasions before Luis Suarez made it 2-0 after 25 minutes when he capitalised clinically on a Michael Dawson error.

Spurs looked out of their depth and despite some moments of revival before the end of the first half there was never much worry for Brendan Rodgers’s side.

Liverpool’s attack was as potent, and difficult to deal with, today as it has been in recent weeks. Raheem Sterling, the eventual man of the match, was a constant source of worry for Spurs, with his dribbling, passing and pressing all helping to drive the game in the direction Liverpool wanted it to go.

Philippe Coutinho added the third goal on 55 minutes, with a low drive from 25 yards.

The final goal was a scrappier affair than much of Liverpool’s attacking play. A free kick into the box went through a cluster of bodies and as it nestled in the net it transpired Jordan Henderson had got the decisive touch.

Liverpool go top of the league on 71 points.
