Liverpool have confirmed the signing of long-term target Virgil van Dijk from Southampton.

The Telegraph reported earlier in the day that a deal was imminent, and the Merseyside club confirmed the signing on Wednesday evening.

Jurgen Klopp's men have conceded 23 goals in the league so far, and could definitely use the former Celtic man's prowess to help stabilise their leaky back line.

Dejan Lorven has struggled at the heart of the Liverpool defence, while goalkeeper Simon Mignolet's form has been inconsistent, to say the least.

If the figure of £75 million is to be believed, Van Dijk would become the most expensive defender in world football, ahead of Kyle Walker's £52 million transfer between Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester City in the summer.

The defender would join Rickie Lambert, Dejan Lovren, Nathaniel Clyne, Adam Lallana and Sadio Mane who have all moved from Southampton to Liverpool in recent years.

Scottish champions Celtic are also in line for a bumper payday, after they inserted a 10% sell-on clause before the defender moved to the Premier League.
